Wound and Tissue Repair

Accelerate Healing with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

Healing chronic wounds and repairing damaged tissues can be long and challenging. At Under Pressure, we offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) as a powerful solution to speed up wound healing and tissue repair. Furthermore, we have partnered with The Wound Center to offer combined comprehensive wound care services to our patients. Whether you're dealing with diabetic ulcers, surgical wounds, or radiation-induced tissue damage, HBOT helps reduce complications and enhances your quality of life.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive treatment in which you breathe 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber at 2.0ATA or greater pressure. This process allows your blood to carry more oxygen to damaged tissues, helping them heal faster. Increased oxygen levels stimulate tissue growth, reduce inflammation, and fight infection—critical steps in treating chronic wounds.

Conditions Treated:

  1. Diabetic Foot Ulcers:
    • Impact: Slow-healing open sores on the feet due to diabetes, at high risk for infection.
    • How HBOT Helps: Increases oxygen to the wound, promoting faster healing and lowering the risk of infection and amputation. It stimulates angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), and clearing lactic acid, leading to quicker recovery and enhanced tissue regeneration, preventing future breakdown.
  2. Pressure Ulcers (Bedsores):
    • Impact: Injuries caused by prolonged pressure on the skin, common in people with limited mobility.
    • How HBOT Helps: Boosts oxygen flow to the affected areas, speeding up healing and tissue repair.
  3. Venous Stasis Ulcers:
    • Impact: Chronic leg wounds caused by poor circulation.
    • How HBOT Helps: Reduces swelling, improves circulation, and accelerates healing.
  4. Arterial Ulcers:
    • Impact: Painful ulcers are due to reduced blood flow and are often treatment-resistant.
    • How HBOT Helps: Increases oxygen delivery, promoting wound healing, angiogenesis and reducing complications.
  5. Surgical Wounds:
    • Impact: Slow-healing or infected post-surgical wounds.
    • How HBOT Helps: Accelerates recovery, lowers infection risk, and minimizes scarring, establishing a new blood supply.
  6. Radiation-Induced Tissue Damage:
    • Impact: Chronic wounds or necrosis caused by radiation therapy.
    • How HBOT Helps: Promotes tissue repair, stimulates angiogenesis, reduces pain and inflammation, and improves quality of life.
  7. Burns:
    • Impact: Extensive tissue damage that’s prone to infection and slow healing.
    • How HBOT Helps: Improves oxygenation, speeds up healing, reduces infection risk, and minimizes scarring.

How HBOT Works for Wound Care:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy delivers concentrated oxygen to your blood, which helps wounds heal faster by:

  • Stimulating Tissue Regeneration: HBOT promotes new blood vessel growth and collagen formation.
  • Reducing Inflammation: It decreases swelling and pain, making healing more comfortable.
  • Fighting Infection: HBOT enhances the body’s ability to combat infections by boosting oxygen supply to infected tissues.
  • Improving Circulation: It ensures oxygen and nutrients reach the wound site, aiding in faster recovery.

The treatment process

1

Initial consultation

The first step involves a comprehensive assessment by one of our healthcare professionals to determine the suitability of HBOT for the patient’s specific condition.

  • Medical History Review: A detailed evaluation of your health background and the nature of your wound to ensure a safe treatment approach.
  • Wound Assessment: An examination of the wound’s size, depth, healing progress, and potential complications to establish a starting point for therapy.
  • Treatment Goals: Setting personalized objectives such as reducing infection risk, accelerating healing, and minimizing scarring.
  • Customized Plan Development: Based on the assessment, we design a tailored HBOT treatment plan with recommendations for the number of sessions and expected outcomes.
2

Treatment Process

  • What to Expect During Your HBOT Sessions: Each session lasts 60 to 120 minutes. During it, you relax in a pressurized chamber while breathing pure oxygen. You may feel slight ear pressure similar to flying, which is normal as the chamber is pressurized.
  • Session Frequency: Depending on the severity of your condition, you may require several sessions per week for several weeks. Your treatment plan is customized to your healing needs.
  • After the Session: Most patients feel relaxed and energized after their HBOT sessions and can resume daily activities immediately.
3

Preparing for your HBOT treatment

  • Pre-Treatment Guidelines:
    • Avoid smoking and caffeine 2 hours before, and avoid drinking alcohol 12 hours before treatment.
    • Hydrate well and eat a protein-rich meal before.
    • Consult with our team if you’re on medications to ensure safe usage.
  • Post-Treatment Care: Resume normal activities post-session, but stay hydrated and avoid strenuous tasks. Do not smoke 2 hours after treatment, avoid flying and alcohol consumption for 12 hours.
4

Contraindications and Safety Information

  • Who Should Avoid HBOT: While HBOT is generally safe, certain conditions such as untreated pneumothorax, recent eye surgery, or recent ear or sinus surgery, as well as certain medications may prevent its use. Our medical team will assess your health to determine if HBOT suits you.
5

Expected Outcomes

  • Healing Timeline: Results vary by condition, with chronic wounds often showing significant improvement in size, depth, and pain within weeks of regular treatment. Some patients see improvement after just a few sessions.
  • Long-Term Benefits: Faster healing, reduced scarring, lower infection risks, and improved tissue health are among the long-term benefits, especially for patients managing chronic conditions.
