Clostridial Myonecrosis (Gas Gangrene)
The type of infection that has death of tissue caused by anaerobic bacilli. This infection causes toxins forming in cells, tissues, and blood vessels which will lead to dead tissue and release gas. Most of these infections come from open wounds and surgery that are exposed to bacteria. Gas Gangrene can develop when blood flow to body tissues gets compromised. There is more risk to people with diabetes, atherosclerosis, and vascular disease. One thing that can help restore or save the body parts infected is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. When exposed to pressured oxygen, it has been shown to treat these types of serious infection just like it does on wound repair. Trials have shown success when HBO is combined with surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy.
