Skin Grafts and Flaps
Tissue grafts and flaps are used as a reconstruction for wounds from disease, tumors, trauma, burns and infections. A skin graft takes the transfer of a portion of the skin to cover a wound. A flap is the tissue component that includes skin, tissue, bone and muscle. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been shown to benefit as a treatment to supply oxygen to the new attached tissue wound site. This treatment has shown to salvage compromised flaps and grafts as it can stimulate growth of new blood vessels and increase oxygen to the tissues.
